What is Depression? Symptoms, Causes and Treatment

20 May 2025  ·  Dr. Rakesh Kumar Singh

Depression is a serious mental health condition that affects millions of people worldwide. It is far more than just feeling sad — it is a persistent low mood that interferes with daily life, work, relationships and physical health.

Common Symptoms

  • Persistent sadness, emptiness or hopelessness
  • Loss of interest in activities once enjoyed
  • Fatigue and low energy even after rest
  • Difficulty concentrating or making decisions
  • Changes in appetite or weight
  • Sleep disturbances — insomnia or sleeping too much
  • Feelings of worthlessness or excessive guilt

Causes of Depression

Depression results from a combination of genetic, biological, psychological and environmental factors. A family history of depression, major life events, chronic stress and certain medical conditions can all contribute.

Treatment

Depression is highly treatable. At Manas Clinic, Dr. Singh uses evidence-based approaches including medication (antidepressants), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), lifestyle counselling and, where needed, structured psychotherapy programmes. Most patients see significant improvement within 4–8 weeks of starting treatment.

If you or a loved one are experiencing symptoms of depression, do not wait — early treatment leads to faster and more complete recovery.
